How Do They Work?

Floating ads or overlay ads are expandable ad formats that display rich media advertising superimposed onto the content of a web page when a user opens that page - just like the one that appeared on this page when it first opened. Caught your eye right off the bat, yes? That’s what they’re made to do. Then as you saw, after a brief period of time, (customizable, usually 5-30 seconds) the floating ad disappears or becomes smaller and less obtrusive.

The most basic of floating ads simply displays or “floats” over the page, appearing either full screen or in a smaller rectangular window. A floating ad may or may not provide a button to close the window before it disappears on its own. Other more advanced types of overlay ads come in all shapes and sizes and can include sound, animation or even interactive elements!
