Names Generation Algorithm

In the new SmartPPC 7 you won’t be made to give names to campaigns. So you wont see this again:
No names

Instead names are going to be created automatically.

There is a slight problem with that. If you are an untidy person (like I am) It may happen that you will never give sensible names to your campaigns. In that case you’ll get a situation that you might meet in Google AdWords:

Yeah, a lot of campaigns and all of them have name “Campaign #N”. And it is really tricky to distinguish them.

To overcome this problem, but still don’t make you fill names, we are planning to implement a curious Names Generation Algorithm which will invent still useless but not so similar names.

This means that if you ara an untidy person, in SmartPPC 7 you will have you campaigns list look something like that:

Angle brackets tells you that name was generated automatically.

As on one hand most of our customers are Americans and on the other hand American culture is wide spread, Names Generation Algorithm will use words and phrases from American films, show etc.

Making an interesting dictionary of well known for Americans phrases is quite complicated task for us, Russians, so we would appreciate your help and ideas of how this could be done.

Tutorial wizard

One of the cool features that we are planning to implement in the new SmartPPC 7 is, how we have called it, a “Tuturial wizard”.

Wizard is a quite common interface pattern that is used for guiding user through a number of steps. I’m sure you have seen one when installing programs in Windows.

In advertising software wizards are frequently used to guide user through a campaign creation process, ‘cause it can be tricky when you face it for the first time. Google, Yahoo, Microsoft do have such wizards as well as SmartPPC 6.

Besides campaign creation advertising software must provide a way to edit already created campaigns which is usually implemented with the use of different kinds of small (e.g. in-place) editors.

This practice, when you have one way to create something and another way to edit it, isn’t perfect. It leads to an inconsistent user experience which in turn ends up with a bad habits getting and double user interface complexity.

It would be much better to have one interface for both creation and edition of campaigns. This would help new users to become extended ones faster. But how can one interface be used if we need to guide new users and give fast edition tools to experienced ones?

We have found a solution — it is a “Tutorial wizard”. So, SmartPPC 7 will have one interface for both creation and edition of campaigns which is pretty cool.

We haven’t invented anything new, we have just adopted a very common idea that has been used for years in computer games, especially strategic ones.
In such games you are often offered to start playing with a tutorial campaign in which you are being guided through the game interface and features.

SmartPPC 7 will use exactly the same idea of guiding. It will have an interface for edition and it will guide you through the same interface while creation campaigns.

As you see a wizard is just a semitransparent layer which guides you through the campaign edition interface.

There are some problems in program implementation of the Tutorial wizard, but I’m sure our programmers will handle them and, with our soft, advertisers will have an opportunity to fulfill their every everyday tasks fast and consistent.

My name is Nick Toverovskiy and I’m a new Orbitscripts interface designer. This means that from now on Orbitscripts products will have not only the unique and outstanding functionality but also a powerful but extremely easy-to-use user interface which I hope you’ll love.

SmartPPC 7 — is a new big version that we have started developing about a month ago. And it is going to be some kind of a revolution ‘cause interface will be totally redesigned in order to make our products simpler, faster and even more powerful.

What is Metasearch?

In the age of advanced Internet Technologies there are thousands of different web-sites of any content, and every day the other thousand of web-sites are appeared. Thus, arises a question: how can user find necessary information among this set of interest?! To help Internet’s users to solve this problem there are Search Engines which serve a very important role: they let users to find required information and assist web-sites’ owners to get revenue by monetizing traffic of their web-sites.

Nowadays there are great numbers of web-sites in World Wide Web which enable users to make a search thought Internet.

For several years, Orbitscripts Company has been developed search sites which are used different solutions of creating optimal search engine. In this article we decide to share our experience with you.

There are two basic methods of creating search solutions. The differences between them are the mode of collecting information, its storage and index. Let’s separately examine each solution.

Own search engine

This method assumed that you have you own search engine. Installed software of such engine collects the information from network resources (web-sites, web-pages, various files etc.) and storages this information into its database. It’s obvious that nonindexing and disordered information is useless and visitor’s search may take a long time. By having your own search engine you will be independent from anyone because everything will be concentrated in your hands – the data collections, its storage and its usage – for example, in the case if you want to create your own search site. Unfortunately, this solution as everything in our world is not without flaws, it has strict requirements to hardware and network resources. To collect the information there is a need of high-bandwidth Internet access, to storage the collected web-sites a large footprint is required and for the information indexing you will need a significant computer resources (such as processors, RAM etc.), otherwise the information won’t appear in search results. We must admit that this solution is rather expensive and not everyone can afford it. The examples of search engines which are using this method are Google, Yahoo, Ask etc.

Getting search results from other search engines

At this rate you system acts as a broker between you own visitors and other search engines. Working process of this method is rather simple: your system gets request from your visitor, then it translates the request to other search engines, receives the answer and return the answer to your visitor. The other advantage of this method is that there is no need of any significant investments of computing resources. You don’t have to pre-collect information from large amount of web-sites and then storage it on your server for further indexing. All you required is a high-bandwidth Internet access which, as matter of fact, already affords a majority of providers.

However, this solution also is not without drawbacks. As the operated data belongs to other resources your system has a reduced reliability. Data’s format which is returned from the search engine may be changed at any time that’s mean – your search become useless until you adapt your system to these changes. The request from your visitor occurs in two steps: step one – a request on your site, step two – your request on search resource and backwards, thereby the latency time for user’s response can be delay. Thus crops up another hidden drawback – your system will entirely depend on the reaction time of the search engine which resources you use. A large amount of requests to the search engine’s service can lead to unpleasant consequences – you system can be banned. Or the search resource which you are using may disappear from the Internet landscape. In both cases your system stops working.

Though, let’s not jump with conclusions. Indeed, if you build a system based only on one search recourse then there is no point to use this method. But  what will be if you’ll increase the reliability of you system by using several search engines? Let’s imagine that instead of one search resource you use ten resources. Even if three of the search engines refuse your request and two of them changed the data’s format, you still have five working search engines.Thus visitor will receive search results on his request in your system. To avoid a situation when your system can be banned use caching.  When a visitor makes a request to you system, you’ll reserve the request from search engine on your plate. And when there is a similar request from the other visitor (or may be from the same one), you won’t have to make second request to the remote search service, your visitor just get the previously received request from the remote server which will reduce the latency time. Therefore you will cut down the number of the requests to remote servers and increase the reliability of your system.

You may think that the additional ten resources will increase the required time to survey all ten resources which will at least tenfold augment the latency time of your system response.  Partly you’re right. If search resources are inquired sequentially, then you will have to face up described above problems. Therefore we suggest to make parallel requests to search resources.

During several years our Company uses the method of parallel requests to search resources. This method has proved to be excellent. However, the solution has its own nuances. What if when using the parallel requests scheme nine sources return results for 3 seconds, and the tenth – sometimes for 2 seconds and sometimes for 9 seconds. It is obvious that if we wait for all ten sources, general latency time can reach 9 seconds, which is too long, and the cause is – tenth resource, the weakest link. Obviously, the best solution is to adjudge a certain time interval during which your system receives data from remote search resources. For our example, if the time interval is 4 seconds, requests from ten or nine resources always are getting in 4 seconds!

This method has indisputable advantages over own search engine method. You can provide your visitors with search results from several search engines, so your visitors don’t have to surf all search resources and obtain results from each of them separetly. By using parallel method your system will combine similar search results from different search engines into one and display meta-information where the location and the sources of the result are indicated. Such information certainly is rather interesting to the visitor than a result from single system.

Notice, how may look search results collected from several search engines:

Ranking metasearch results

The efficiency of this search method is higher than the separate search.

This solution calls – Metasearch. While creating your own system or choosing exciting one, notice that returned and obtained results from several search resources can be “ranked”, and further sorting can be based on the value of the “rank”. What is “rank”? “Rank” is a definite value estimated by certain functional algorithm – “ranking” which determines this value. Let’s examine one of the algorithms. Imagine that the result’s “rank” is higher the greater the amount of search resources where it was found and the higher the average of its positions in all found resources. Displayed above image introduce the processes of getting value for each obtained result and sorting returned search results according to this value. This type of search calls Ranking Metasearch.

Nowadays Internet is not only a way of sharing information, but also huge business machine by which people earn billions of dollars. The main source of revenue is advertising placed on web-sites. How to get ads for you web-site? It’s simple! Interesting that this process is similar to Metasearch. As matter of fact you need to register on servers which provide ads (Miva.com, LookSmart.com, …), then get results from defined links associated with certain keywords and display received results on you web-site. You will get revenue from ads impressions or from “clicks” on ads committed by visitors. But the point is that with every visitor’s search results and ads from several servers are displayed at once. (let’s hope he will make a “click”:-))

Advertisers’ ads can be displayed both on your search site and on publishers’ sites. So, if the visitor clicks on an ad displayed your website (“own clicks”), you’ll get the full profit amount. But if a visitor clicks on an ad located on publishers’ site (“publishers clicks”), you’ll share a certain percent of click price.

Ideally, you’ll receive revenue from “own” and “publishers” clicks. The priority of ad displaying is determined by cost per click: the higher the price the higher the probability that somebody will click on this ad.

When a visitor is taken from affiliate’s site to search results page of SmartPPC Power there is a sharp change in the design. To avoid this SmartPPC Power has Co-Brand.

Co-Brand allows affiliate to change the design of SmartPPC Power search page to the design which will match his site design. It’s obvious that this custom design will be shown to visitors only when they make a search from affiliate’s sites.

Dynamic Portal plug-in allows administrator to display dynamic content on his site.  Dynamic portal enables administrator to create a set of categories which will be assigned to defined words and phrases. 

For example, a visitor of affiliate’s site can see a page with “animals” categories – vermigrade, fishes, dogs and etc. And after visitor refreshes the page, the content of categories will change.

Created portal can be used by affiliates as index page which their visitors will enter coming to their sites.

Toolbar simplifies making search through SmartPPC Power. Administrator and affiliates can put a link for toolbar downloading. And their sites visitors will be able to download it and to use in their browsers. 

 

Thereby, the system is a quite simple – advertisers pay for each click, feeds pay you a certain commission for each click. You have stable revenue and help your publishers to earn.

A site serving advertisements is like a real business. To make it profitable you should make efforts and some investments.

SmartPPC Search

Today we would like to review the project that is currently being developed by our company – SmartPPC Search. This solution will let you build a meta-search portal with the ability of serving advertisements from XML feeds.

SmartPPC Search will include a wide range of social functions such as comments, ratings, toolbar and creation of adjustable personal pages. Thus users will be able to vote for good search results, rate posted comments, bookmark the most interesting search result. Users will be able to change look and feel of their personal pages using different colors palettes and themes. On the personal pages there will be an area where user will be able to place boxes with different information – currency rates, weather, horoscope, news, search results, etc.

Search results for SmartPPC Search software will be simultaneously obtained from various popular search resources such as Google, Yahoo, etc.

The system will be based on modularity and will support functional expanding. We’ll apply the projecting models based on the book of Martin Fowler – “Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture”.

At the moment we’re planning to complete and release the new software approximately in the end of September.

A few words about SmartPPC EVO

Today we’d like to introduce a short review of our new software – SmartPPC EVO. Our main goal was to provide an opportunity for all website owners to earn ad revenue by delivering and managing advertisements on their sites. Our developers have applied maximal effort to make it understandable and easy-to-use.

During the development robust and advanced frameworks were used. To make interfaces up-to-date our engineers widely applied object-oriented approach. In the same time, to ensure high performance and efficiency some modules were realized by low-level programming languages. Thanks to the newest technologies used in the system we’re convinced will be in demand during a long time period.

Expanding system functional can be made by additional modules. The modularity principle used for SmartPPC EVO allows its owner to add and use necessary extensions from the list of available ones. Today we have 12 modules ready. We are working tirelessly to reach the total number of modules of 100.

6 independent solutions are planned to be released on SmartPPC EVO basis: Ad Serving, Ad Marketplace, Ad Agency, Search Solution, Directory Solution, Parking Domain Solution. Let’s briefly overview each the solutions:

Ad Serving enables sites owner to manage advertising from third-party sources and from his own advertisers on his sites.

Ad Marketplace will allow you to create a network for selling ads, some kind of “Market of advertising”, where advertisers and publishers (site owners) will find each other.

Creating campaign

Ad Agency will give you a chance to create your own ad agency’s site that contains full functionality of the second solution (Ad Marketplace) and, in addition, CPA program, tracking and affiliate marketing.

Search Solution will be a meta-search portal with ad serving features. It’ll include a wide range of social functions such as comments, ratings, toolbar, and creation of adjustable personal pages.

Directory Solution – will allow to build directory of ads for any sphere with the possibility to display paid advertisements. This solution can be used for online real estate agency, car or software selling portal, etc.

And finally, the last one – Parking Domain Solution will give you an opportunity to make a service of domains parking, where owners will be able to manage ads on parked domains.

Each of the 6 standard solutions is a set of certain modules and extensions. That’s why if a system owner wants he can create a custom unique solution buying only necessary modules for his own needs and his business goals. No doubt, you won’t manage to find any analogues among ad management systems.
