Hi!
My Name is Serge and I’m robot manager of OrbitScripts design team. (:
Today i want to show you how to draw realistic robots in the Photoshop graphic editor. For instance, let’s take the robot that is placed on the main page of Orbitscripts.com:

First of all you need to make sketches. As main handiest tools I prefer to use a pencil and paper.

Then you need to scan the image and convert it to vector with the help of Pen tool. Select the tone of planes to make the image looks more like three-dimensional image.

Now we need to make the most laborious work: draw shadows and lights using brushes. Ideally, gradients should be made in Illustrator using Mesh tool, still I didn’t find a time completely “feel” the tool (: To make the robot looks more attractive on the main page we need to make Rotate Canvas → Flip Canvas Horizontal:

Let’s add glares and reflections. The steel (and robots are usually made of steel) has very strong reflections, so don’t miss it!

We are almost done. Let’s remove color reflections and strong, “out of fashion” glares that have glory.

Here are couples of examples from our website where you can trace a chain of actions: pencil → scanner → vector → volume:
